How to tell if it’s cellulitis

Cellulitis is a painful, expanding infection that occurs when bacteria enter through a break in the skin, whether it be a cut, a puncture wound, or a dry and flaky patch. The affected area of skin may exhibit:

  • Blistering
  • Blotchiness
  • Dimpling
  • Redness
  • Spotting
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Warmth

Although cellulitis can occur anywhere in the body, it most often affects the lower legs, and it typically only impacts one side of the body (although children tend to develop cellulitis in the face or neck). In addition to the symptoms listed above, someone with a more severe case of cellulitis may also experience a fever, which can signal the need for emergency treatment.

Don’t wait to seek treatment.

If cellulitis is caught early, it can usually be successfully treated using antibiotics. If left untreated, however, cellulitis can spread to the bloodstream and lymph nodes and quickly become a life-threatening condition. Even if it doesn’t progress to this stage, recurring cases of cellulitis can lead to chronic swelling of the affected area. That’s why it’s important to seek treatment as soon as possible. If you’re concerned that you may have cellulitis or another skin infection, contact DispatchHealth today.
