Dignity, compassion and respect. I have had the privilege of having wonderful mentors that have taught me that knowledge alone is not enough to care for patients, you must give your heart and soul to your practice. Active patient engagement is key to a successful Provider-Patient relationship. It is only by truly listening to a patient's complaints and concerns that a provider can hope to identify what condition is affecting their patient; and it is only through communication, patient education and shared-decision making that a successful plan of care can be devised and implemented to get a patient back on the road to health.

"Healthcare is as much about service as it is medicine. In order to treat a patient effectively one must completely shift their focus from themselves to the patient that they are treating and evaluating. While the disease process and pathophysiology is a vital aspect of providing safe and effective care, having a holistic approach paying attention to all aspects of that individuals life is the only way to provide care in my opinion. Learning and attempting to be humble, respective and most importantly selfless is I feel vital to provide safe, effective and excellent care."

Patient-centric care: I believe it is important to get to know each of my patients in the short time we have together. I enjoy getting to know them, and learning about each patient and understanding their unique situation helps me to provide the best care I can for them. I think it is essential to understand what really caused the patient to want to see me that day and to utilize that information to try to ensure that they feel better after they’ve seen me than they did before seeking care.

With each patient I encounter, I remind myself that being allowed to be involved with a person during a time in their life when they feel vulnerable is a privilege that most people are never afforded. Reminding myself of the vulnerable position the patient is in when they are entrusting me with their care also helps me to understand the range of reaction patients may have to interventions or emotions that surface as a result of my care. I also have a huge commitment to stay as current as possible with new medical research and information.

One of the main reasons I entered the nursing profession is because it is a career that cares about people. As a healthcare professional, I think our purpose is conceivably defined as the differences we make in others’ lives. I strongly believe and strive to selflessly treat others as I would like to be treated: with kindness, respect, empathy, and honesty. I believe in providing compassionate care, always regarding my patients as people, not just symptoms and data. These supportive aspects of care and the close rapport I aim to develop with my patients are the cornerstone of who I am as a healthcare provider.
