What causes nausea?

Nausea can be caused by many different conditions, including:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Brain injury
  • Constipation
  • Dehydration
  • Food poisoning
  • Migraine headaches
  • Motion sickness
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI) in the kidneys
  • Viruses like influenza (flu) or norovirus (“stomach flu”)

You may be able to treat nausea at home if you address the underlying cause. For example, if you’re constipated, drink more water and eat more fiber. But don’t wait to get care for nausea if you don’t know the cause.
