Strep throat: causes, symptoms, & treatment
Strep throat is a highly contagious infection that is transmitted from person to person. Once exposed, a carrier will begin to show symptoms within 1-3 days. Strep throat symptoms will persist from anywhere between 7-10 days.
The most common symptoms include:
- Throat pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes
Medical treatment will help resolve the symptoms faster. Treatment may include antibiotics to eliminate the infection, as well as other medications for symptom management. Children are especially prone to strep throat, and cases become more rare into adulthood.
If left untreated
Untreated strep throat can cause infections in other areas of the ear, nose, and throat. The most common spread of infection includes the tonsils and ear infections. Not treating strep throat can prolong the symptoms, making it harder to get back to work or school.
